The Graduate Psychology Department at Immaculata University is offering a new cohort-based certificate program in Existential-Humanistic Theories and Application. The 20-credit, two-year sequence certificate program will be available for fall 2002.

The certificate program includes online courses, developed in a person-centered format, in addition to weekend retreats designed for skill and personal development. This format allows both students and faculty from throughout the country to participate and communicate in an ongoing learning community. Professionals from distant locations have the opportunity to integrate continued professional development into their work and personal schedules.

This program is designed for advanced study by counselors, social workers, and psychologists who have completed a master´s or doctoral program in counseling, social work, or psychology. Advanced students who are actively completing the final stages of one of these programs may also apply.

Dr. Marijo Lucas, assistant professor of psychology and certificate coordinator, commented that, "Recently, through the establishment of this learning community and the certificate program, Immaculata has been very supportive in helping provide this opportunity for professionals on the East coast to be able to study and integrate the importance of subjectivity, authentic presence, being, and phenomenology into their own existing clinical work. And in the format provided, we will be able to join with colleagues on the West coast to share broadly in the larger existential community."

Each semester students will participate in three learning experiences: an online learning community, an online reading seminar, and a three-day weekend retreat.

• Reading Seminars consists of intensive reading of a particular theorist or concept. The online courses include on-going discussion among students and faculty, as well as other professionals and writers conversant with the specialized area.

• Learning Communities create an online forum where students interact through reading of professional journals, discussion of conferences, as well as the posting and critiquing of manuscripts-in-progress. Students also dialogue with faculty who serve as mentors and facilitators of learning.

• Three-Day Weekend Retreats offered once each semester at a campus location, sequentially build skills and insights into the clinical model. The retreats emphasize personal growth, skills development, and clinical consultation and supervision in conjunction with certificate faculty.

• Electives (two additional credit hours) are required to complete the 20-credit certificate. Students may participate in Special Topics workshops, lectures by visiting scholars, or other courses related to the program.

During the fall, Immaculata will offer a set of courses available for those not ready to take the complete program but who are interested in taking a reading seminar and retreat this fall.
