Starting this fall, Immaculata University will offer a new major in Interactive Digital Media (IDM) leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Students will benefit from an equal balance of both the technical aspects of digital media and the creative design that is rarely offered in one major. The program will help students establish strong visual thinking and conceptual skills, laying a foundation to develop code, experiment with new hardware and software, and consider the social and ethical implications of emerging technologies.

The digital age has led to a growing demand for web developers, multimedia artists, digital media specialists, and IT professionals in a variety of fields. Immaculata’s interdisciplinary program gives students the broad preparation and the practical experience needed to enter the interactive entertainment industry, and media and design world, or the corporate sectors of marketing and digital strategy.

The IDM major is the integration of all digital media including electronic text, graphics, moving images, sound, web design, internet technologies, and digital animation into engaging media. In addition to these technical skills, students also have an opportunity to take courses in Art, Communication, and Business Marketing.

“Students will not only learn the skills and tools that are increasingly in demand in the corporate world, entertainment industry, technology realm, mass media, and numerous other fields, they will also graduate with an understanding of the history and culture of this emerging field,” commented Sister Monica Sicilia, IHM, instructor in Interactive Digital Media.

In addition to the classwork, students will also be required to complete a three-credit internship in an industry position that closely matches their career goals. Membership in professional organizations, such as Philly Interactive, Bēhance, Awwwards and the Interactive Design Association, are encouraged for IDM majors.

Technology is rapidly evolving and related technology occupations share the growth potential which crosses several disciplines. Projections by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, list job growth at 20% for web developers between 2012-2022 and predicts a 6% job increase in multimedia artists and animators. In addition, U.S. News and World Report listed “software developer” as the #1 job in 2014.

“What makes this degree so exciting is the technology tool-set that our students will gain, opening doors to many employment opportunities. The prospects are endless,” stated Sister Monica.
