Lionville Resident Dane Tilghman Selected as Featured Artist for the 2010 Immaculata Art Show

Selected as the Featured Artist for the 27th Annual Immaculata University Art Show is Lionville, PA resident Dane Tilghman. The 2010 Art Show opens with a Preview Gala on Friday, May 7, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. The Show is then open to the public, free of charge, from Saturday, May 8, through Sunday, May 16.
As a prolific painter for the past 27 years, Dane creates about 300 paintings a year out of his Lionville studio. His art works of African American musicians, baseball players, and Americana stems from his love of the history of these subjects. Working from old black and white photographs, he brings to life personalities and nostalgia from the past and the everyday man, woman, and child. When creating the images, he alternates between four styles: realism, cubism, impressionism, and elongated style.
A crowning achievement came when one of his paintings was selected for the Baseball Hall of Fame – only the second African American artist to be such honored. In addition, his artwork has been featured on The Cosby Show and he has created over-sized murals for Turner Field in Atlanta, GA, Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, and Citizen Bank Park in Philadelphia. He also has 40 drawings at the Chester County Historical Society for the Underground Railroad display. Dane has also been involved with keeping the legacy of the Negro Baseball League alive by creating artwork of famous former players. Collectors of his artwork include notables such as Dave Winfield, Nelson Mandela, Bill Cosby, the estate of Ossie Davis, the Nabisco Corporation, and Astra-Zeneca. Kutztown University commissioned him to create a commemorative poster for the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education.
"Live the dream," is what Dane would tell aspiring young artists. He recommends that young artists should keep focused – and keep the passion, "that will keep you going," he stated.
Upon being named the 2010 Featured Artist, he commented, "I am very excited and humbled. I never thought it would happen. It took me by surprise."
Dane lives with his wife Rosalyn in Lionville. They have two children.
