IU Offers Two New Endorsement Programs

IU offers two new endorsement programsBeginning July 2014, the College of Graduate Studies at Immaculata University will offer two fully online Endorsement Programs for teachers that are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education: Instructional Coaching and Mathematics Coaching.

Provided by a college or university such as Immaculata, these short Program Endorsements, with a 12-credit maximum, document knowledge in new and emerging areas where formal certification does not exist.  It is also intended to improve a teacher’s skills in dealing with complex classroom settings.  These endorsements can be added to existing Level I or Level II Certificates but are not required.

Endorsement in Instructional Coaching:

Instructional Coaching is ongoing, classroom-based and personalized for each teacher.  It provides consistent support to teachers as they work to improve practice based on collaboration, inquiry and consultative feedback from their coach.  An integral component of the program is the field experiences that are integrated into each of the three-credit courses.  The minimum field experience hours for the Instructional Coaching Endorsement Program are 45.  To be admitted into the program, candidates must hold an instructional I or II certificate and have at least three years of successful teaching experience.

Endorsement in Mathematics Coaching:

Mathematics Coaching represents sound, job-embedded, professional development that has the potential to improve instructional practice and ultimately student achievement.  Research shows that mathematics coaches have a positive impact in schools, even narrowing the achievement gap between certain categories of students.  Each of the four courses has a field experience requirement that is integral to the program; the minimum field experience hours for the Mathematics Coaching Program is 45.  To be admitted into the program, candidates must have at least three years of successful teaching experience and hold an instructional I or II certificate in one or more of the following areas: Elementary Education K-6; PreK-4; or 7-12 Mathematics.

A survey of area superintendents indicated that the Endorsement in Instructional Coaching and the Endorsement in Mathematics Coaching are a highly valued credential which can provide educators with more marketability in the public school system and is an indicator of a highly qualified educator.
