Immaculata University Hosts Summer Spirituality Days

Immaculata University (IU) will host the Summer Spirituality Days from Monday, June 20 to Thursday, June 23, 2011, featuring four courses on theology and happiness, psychology and spirituality, poetry and prayer, and compassionate service. Participants may choose to take one or more courses for personal enrichment or for Continuing Education Units (CEUs), approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors and Psychologists.
The mission of the Summer Spirituality Days is to provide an opportunity for participants to pause, be enriched, reflect, and share with others the movements of God in their lives. Courses emphasize the integration of spirituality and psychology as one presents one´s whole self before God in genuine relationship. Those who seek God, minister to others, or work in counseling or psychology are invited to participate.
Father James Dolan, S.J. will lead the morning session, "How our Theology Affects our Spirituality," each day of the event from 9 a.m. to noon. He studied with modern mystic Father Tony deMello, S.J. and will be sharing some of deMello´s insights on prayer and happiness. Each day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sister Jeannine O´Kane, IHM, Ph.D. will teach the first afternoon class, "The Role of Discernment and Decision in Destiny: Changing Your Life from Biography to Autobiography with a Foreword by God." Sister Jeannine, professor of graduate psychology at Immaculata, has researched the integration of spirituality and psychology and will discuss ways to overcome psychological barriers in order to respond to God´s invitation. Sister Marcille McEntee, IHM will lead the second afternoon workshop, "Poetry and Prayer: A Walk Along the Path to Both," also from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Sister Marcille, instructor of English at Immaculata, will explore the work of several poets, including Thomas Merton, Mary Oliver, and Denise Levertov, to discover their paths from poetry to prayer.
