Championship Mighty Macs of Immaculata University to Be Inducted Into CYO Hall of Fame

The Immaculata University championship Mighty Macs of the 1970s will be inducted in the Archdiocesan Office for Youth and Young Adults (CYO) Hall of Fame at the 16th Annual CYO Hall of Fame Banquet on Thursday, March 5, at the Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill, PA.
Joining the Mighty Macs in enshrinement are: Mr. Leo Carlin, Mr. and Mrs. James and Jacqueline Delaney, and Mr. Daniel Quinn. The Hall of Fame ceremony celebrates the inductees who exhibit modern-day Evangelizers who follow in the footsteps of St. Paul. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is celebrating the Year of St. Paul.
The 1972 national championship team, coached by Cathy Rush, won with eleven players – many of whom played CYO basketball in high school. The Mighty Macs won two more consecutive national championships in 1973 and 1974. The popularity and acceptance of the women´s game is often attributed to the early success of the Mighty Macs. Our Lady of Victory, a feature-length film chronicling the 1972 championship season, is expected to be released in 2009.
Theresa Shank Grentz, Hall of Fame Mighty Mac star and vice president for University Advancement at Immaculata University, speaking on behalf of her former teammates, commented "What a wonderful honor to be recognized years later by the Archdiocesan CYO Office for playing a child´s game. So many of us began our careers playing CYO ball and continued to grow and achieve – including national championships, professional careers, while always exhibiting the core values of our faith. The bonds of those championship teams are cemented with the virtuous friendships we began in the seventies and we still maintain today. Playing on those teams was a true gift."
Currently, Immaculata University is a member of the NCAA – Division III and the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC).
Immaculata University, a Catholic comprehensive, coeducational institution, is located 20 miles west of Philadelphia, south of the intersection of route 30 and 352, between Paoli and Exton.
